Real People. Real Stories
Inspiring Stories by People Who Reversed Disease Naturally. A remarkable collection of 36 stories by people who reversed chronic diseases. They suffered from heart disease, lupus, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, obesity and many other diseases. Some were told medications could no longer help, others were told they had only months left to live, and all were told their disease could not be cured. Each of these people, at the point of greatest despair, found their way to a whole plant food lifestyle and reversed their disease without medications or procedures.
Dan Purjes conceived the idea for DISEASE REVERSAL HOPE! Real People. Real Stories. after recovering from his own heart attack through a whole plant food diet, and encountering countless stories of people reversing chronic diseases by converting to a whole food plant-based lifestyle.
While at NYU Hospital after his heart attack, Dan saw an interview of Bill Clinton on CNN in which the former president praised the book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., for helping reverse his angina. President Clinton explained that after leaving the White House he had undergone quadruple bypass surgery to relieve chest pains. Things were good for a while but then the angina pains returned. Doctors said that nothing more could be done. Clinton discovered Esselstyn’s book, recommending a whole food, plant-based diet to reverse heart disease. Clinton converted to the diet, lost 30 pounds in 90 days, saw his angina disappear, and felt healthier than at any time since his teenage years. He urged everyone to read this book.
Lying in an ICU bed at NYU and hearing Clinton’s interview, Dan immediately called his wife, Edna (“Ed”), and asked her to get the book. She came back to the hospital with it and they read it together that night. By morning, Dan and Ed had converted to a whole plant food lifestyle. Dan lost 20 pounds in 60 days and saw his blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, inflammation, and blood sugar all drop dramatically. The physicians at NYU were startled. They had never seen such significant changes in such a short period of time and without medications. They had never heard of Esselstyn’s book so Dan bought it for them.
Dan and Ed went on to fund a clinical trial at NYU that demonstrated a drop in inflammation in cardiovascular-diseased patients that was four times as much on a plant-based diet as compared to the diet recommended by the American Heart Association. Inflammation is a critical component of all chronic diseases. The results were so significant that the Wall Street Journal published an article on the study. The Journal of the American Heart Association published the research article written by the NYU cardiologists involved in the study.
The more Dan went down the plant-based road, the more amazed he was at what he found. It seemed that conversion to a whole food, plant-based diet could reverse just about every chronic disease. He spoke with plant-based physicians who told him stories of incredible disease reversal in their patients and even in their own bodies. Dan asked the physicians to introduce him to some of these people to hear their stories in detail. The stories were incredible and highly inspirational.
It dawned on Dan that there was no one book where people could read about them. Dan decided that a book containing stories of disease reversal through conversion to a whole plant food diet needed to be published. Dan approached his friend, Dr. Scott Stoll, the Chairman of the Plantrician Project, a non-profit organization of thousands of physicians and healthcare professionals interested in plant-based nutrition, and asked Scott to help write the book.
